When it comes to waste heat created by the engine, the boat transfers it to the seawater rather than the air. One of the popular varieties of the heat exchangers is the tubular variety. The tubular array consists of a sizeable tube-like pipe which houses a range of smaller pipes that run through it. The tube contains coolant, and the smaller pipes allow seawater to pass through it. This innovative and creative alternative is simple yet effective, as it will enable the engines to be filled with coolant than seawater. Filling the engine with coolant rather than seawater means that there will be little to no corrosion. One of the downsides to drivers that are cooled directly by seawater is that the boat must operate at a lower temperature to avoid salt precipitation or blockages in the cooling passages.

One of many issues with the heat exchange is the maintenance. When the hot coolant meets the cold seawater, many problems arise as the metal weakens and bends and stretches out of shape. If left untreated it can be a significant health risk to the environments as the risk of leakage becomes more of a possibility. Corrosion of the metal is a common result of the cooling process as it weakens and exposes the metal and renders it vulnerable to rust. Situations such as these are usually caused due to poor maintenance and repair. Majority of heat exchangers are equipped with spare anodes in the case where there may be damages; it is essential that you replace them regularly to ensure a lower risk in rust and corrosion.

When it comes to clearing out your heat exchange pipes, it is essential that you know precisely, what to do and how to do it. To begin cleaning the pipes, take out the endcaps on both sides. Shine a bright light through one side and see if there are any obstructions in the tube. If there are any blockages, wash them out with a garden hose, if unsuccessful use a soft copper wire and push through any obstacles in the pipe. At all costs never use steel wire, as it is very harmful and may damage the pipes. But if there is evidence of buildup in the heat exchange system, it would be suggested to hire a professional to clean it.
