Taking Pets on Board When Sailing – Sailing for Everyone

Every dog lover will seize any chance to take their pet with them when they go anywhere. Same goes for those who have pet cats, ferrets, birds and what not. Dogs, in particular, enjoy the waterways, and some breeds of dogs even love the chance to go for a swim. While a great place that pets are allowed is on a boat, some rules and regulations need to be compiled by when taking a pet on board. The water has some hazard attached to its nature especially in locks and therefore, it is important to keep dogs under control here and tied up safely. If necessary, even put on a life-jacket on your pet to keep them safe and the other vessels safe.

Pet Passport Scheme – UK

According to the pet passport scheme in the UK and other commonwealth countries, for any animal, such a dog or cat has to be microchipped along with an official passport for them. The microchip details are to be entered in the passport as well. Rabies vaccinations should be up to date and carried out within the two months of traveling. Blood tests should be done to check if the right antibodies are present after the vaccinations. The animal that has compiled cannot return into the UK for six months after the date of the vaccine. The vaccine for rabies usually lasts only two years. Therefore, the owner of the animal should make sure all the initial vaccines and booster vaccines are administered correctly and regularly. The passport should contain all the details of the vaccines and should be recorded by the vet that you take your pet to. When your animal is about to return to the country, the animal has to be treated for several infections and worms. Tapeworms should be treated for within five days of landing in the UK.

 The Big Business

Pet owners often worry about where they would carry out their business. Cats are known to be seasick when they are on board, therefore, make sure that any medications are taken along with you on your sail to soften the experience. Dogs usually don’t have any trouble with seasickness and love the experience. You can take a cat litter tray with you on board. This will ensure that there is a place of comfort for your cat to go. Dogs are a little trickier when they have to do their business. If they have been trained correctly, they can probably do their job over the board, or easier option would be to train your dog to use a training pad before you bring them on a sailing adventure.

Here are some general tips for pet owners:

  • Dogs usually learn how to go across the board within a few trips on the boat, to do their business
  • Always carry food and treats for your pets when you are on a vessel
  • Toys and games are a great addition to your baggage for your pets as the ailing time can be long and boring
  • If you are docking your boat, be prepared for your dog to bring in the sand when they come back on board
  • When sailing in the Caribbean, remember that the locals at Saint Lucia are afraid of dogs
  • French areas are great for dogs and dogs to love them too
  • Avoid taking your dog to beaches where there are many people to be courteous
  • Cats usually use only the litterbox
  • Cats like a scratch pad when on board
  • Cats get hair all over the place so watch out
