Top Sailing Schools in the US

If you are thinking of taking up sailing or simply want to improve on your sailing skills then you should find a good sailing school, preferably a school that has licensed and accredited instructors. The American Sailing Association has a list of such sailing schools that are found throughout the US. These schools that they list provide classes for all levels, from beginner’s sailing to more advanced sailing. They also offer certificates from United States Coast Guard certified American Sailing Association (ASA) instructors. There will obviously be more of these schools on states that border the ocean, for example Florida which has several schools. Maine is another state which has several sailing schools since it has the ocean coast.

The Oldest

One of the oldest sailing clubs in Florida is Florida Sailing and Cruising School, which is located in Cape Coral in southwest Florida. This club was established in 1984 and is still active today. They offer ASA certifications and focus on small classes to provide students with the most attention possible.

If you are in southeast Florida and you are a beginner, then you may want to try learning at Palm Beach Sailing Club, which offers courses in Basic Coastal Cruising and Basic Keelboat Sailing. The Florida Keys has Reef Runner Sailing club, which provides classes for all levels of sailing experience, from novice to more advanced sailors.

Maine has a couple of sailing schools. For instance, there is Sebago Sailing which is located on Sebago Lake in Maine. There is also South Portland Sailing Center which offers courses in Basic Coastal Cruising and Basic Keelboat Sailing. All instructors are ASA or US Coast Guard Certified.

The Best Location

Maryland has more than seven sailing schools that are listed on the ASA website. Rock Hall has two of these schools: Delmarva Sailing School and Maryland School of Sailing. There are also schools at Havre De Grace and Annapolis. These sailing schools all offer various levels of training and ASA certification courses. SailTime Annapolis Sailing Academy offers courses that range from beginner-level to more advanced-level sailing.

Since Michigan is located on the shores of the Great Lakes, it has several sailing schools. GT Sailing School holds small classes with ASA certified instructors. Lake St. Clair Sailing School offers sailing courses and also offers training in navigation (by electronics and by using stars).

Some of the oldest sailing clubs are found on the northeastern states in North America; for instance, the Boston Sailing Center in Massachusetts, which was founded in 1977. This school offers a range of courses from basic courses to Coastal Navigation and Advanced Coastal Cruising.

Illinois and Indiana also have ASA sailing schools. Seabreeze Charter is the only sailing school in Illinois that has classes all year round. Bloomington, Indiana has a sailing school called Lake Monroe Sailing Association. They offer the Basic Keelboat Sailing certification. If you are keen to take up sailing, there is sure to be an excellent sailing school in your area.
