What You Will Learn at a Sailing School

What You Will Learn at a Sailing School

As an activity that allows you to participate even if you aren’t wealthy, Sailing is very popular, especially in France. If you look out into the ocean chances are that you would see at least one sailboat or yacht in the waves. Many boat owners are self-taught, but others learn everything there is to know about sailing at a sailing school. Depending on the level of learning there are several courses that you can choose from.

Sailing Options

You can choose a course depending on what you want to sail or pick a generalized path for any boat type. If you are unsure of the kind of boat, you should start off with; you can ask the course organizer to assist with your decision. However, some novice sailors are picky about the type of boat they want to master right from the start. For such sailors, there are courses specific to the kind of boat. While the course will provide ideas on sailing boat types, the boat you decide to buy, or rent will have its respective unique features, which you would need to learn more about from its manual.

Sailing for Beginners

If you are a newbie to sailing, then it is best to start out with the beginner courses. These beginner courses run over two days and are perfect for those who want to try out sailing small boats like multihulls and small keelboats. The courses are designed to help its participants enjoy every aspect of sailing, and the course instructor will be happy to give you all the information about sailing, the boat of your choice.

What to Expect at The Beginner’s Course

Level 1 is the first level, and it covers the bases of how to get afloat without supervision. Level 2 covers the bases of sailing in light winds; you have a choice of sailing in a large sailboat with 2-3 students aboard with an instructor and sailing by yourself. Sailing by yourself may sound difficult and scary, but it helps you learn the steps to sailing a boat a lot easier and is very interesting. For younger sailors- under 16 years, their levels are split up into four stages. After you have completed the levels, you would be equipped with the knowledge that is necessary for the basics of sailing a boat. You are then free to choose any course that will help you further your experience.

Theory and Practical

Like every school course, there is always a practical and theory part in sailing courses. During the actual learning experience, each lesson teaches you how to steer the boat and how to handle sails. A theory about what is what accompanies each practical course. The courses refine your skills and teach you the skills necessary to sail at night and in unfamiliar zones. The theory lessons include learning all the required information that is needed for 500 miles of ocean passageways.

Improving your Sailing Experience

Those who sail at least once a month or a fortnight, have a distinct advantage over those who only sail when they are going on holidays. So, if you want to expand your sailing experience then going through regular courses to upgrade your knowledge can help. When you couple your new knowledge with frequent trips, your sailing expertise will gradually improve. Sailing in different areas supply you with a sense of challenge which helps raise your experience by a substantial amount. So, while treading familiar waters might sound appealing, push yourself a little further to learn more.
